Birmingham submits bid to host 2016 Democratic National Convention

WHNT.com

BIRMINGHAM (WHNT)- The Democratic National Committee announced Saturday that Birmingham and five other cities had submitted bids to host the 2016 Democratic National Convention.  The party will nominate its candidate for President at the convention.

In addition to Birmingham, Cleveland, Columbus, New York, Philadelphia and Phoenix all submitted bids.

“Hosting a party convention is a true honor and we’re thrilled with all the fantastic options that we have going into the next cycle,” said Debbie Wasserman Schultz, the committee chair. “We look forward to evaluating these bids and selecting a city to host this special gathering of Democrats.”

No major candidates have announced a run for the 2016 Democratic nomination.   There is widespread speculation that former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton will throw her had in the ring.

A final decision on the host city is expected later this year or in early 2015.

Europe’s Top Court Rules That Browsing The Internet Does Not In Itself Infringe Copyright (Phew)

Gorgeous post.

TechCrunch

A long-running European legal battle over the copyright status of cached copies of documents held on the computers of Internet users has been resolved today.

A preliminary ruling by the European Court of Justice has sided with common sense, ruling that digital copies shown on a web browser’s computer screen or held temporary in a cache do not in fact infringe on copyright law.

The original case that sparked today’s ruling dates back to 2009, when Meltwater, a news monitoring agency, took the Newspaper Licensing Agency, which is owned by eight of the UK’s largest newspaper groups, to a UK copyright tribunal in order to clarify the extent of its licensing scheme for online articles.

The UK supreme court initially ruled that headlines were subject to copyright, but in 2013 it changed its mind on appeal, and referred the matter to the ECJ to obtain a Europe-wide ruling.

That ruling on the temporary copying inexorably involved in browsing…

The Wind Rises – Review

Great post.

One Room With A View

the wind rises

Hayao Miyazaki’s films have always been bathwater cinema; warm and comforting and so enchantingly illustrated that we never truly want to leave them. The grief of being hoisted out of The Wind Rises, therefore, is all the more pronounced, knowing this is the final entry into a master’s magical filmography.

Although it proves to be a more grown up piece than Miyazaki’s other films, The Wind Rises remains a wonderful vessel with which the director can hold our hands for the final time.

Like its protagonist, and its auteur, these are tender and gentle brushes of exquisite genius.

“The wind is rising!…We must try to live!” A line from Paul Valéry’s The Graveyard By The Sea beats through this masterpiece like a heart. Emotion rises as the film marches towards its conclusion. With its end, and Miyazaki’s retirement, we must try to live.
